SInce time immemorial, women have been supporting women to birth their babies. The word ‘doula’ is Greek for mother’s servant, and a doula is just that. She will provide ongoing support and nurturing throughout pre-labour, birth and beyond. A Doula will meet with a mother prior to her birth to discuss what her birth preferences are and what type of support the mother feels she will most need. A birth ‘plan’ or list of intentions and preferences may be worked on, and any issues that may affect labour are discussed in depth. A Doula is also there to support other members of the birthing team, and can assist partners and family members to remain present to the awe and intensity of birth.

It has been proven in many studies that women who have a birth attendant or doula present at their birth have far lower rates of intervention, analgesia, epidurals and caesarian sections. A Doula is trained in natural ways to reduce pain levels and to work with contractions. Since 1980, research has been conducted to determine the benefits of doula assisted births. These studies showed that there were significant decreases in birth interventions including:

• 50 % decrease in cesarean births
• 60 % decrease in epidurals
• 40 % decrease in the use of cintocinon
• 30% decrease in the use of narcotics
• 30% decrease in the use of forceps
• Overall, a 25% decrease in the length of labor
